Professor Mustafa Aral named Fellow, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

Professor Mustafa AralDr. Mustafa Aral, professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Professor Aral specializes in large scale environmental simulations in surface water and groundwater with expertise in environmental exposure analysis, exposure-dose reconstruction and health risk assessment. Dr. Aral has numerous publications in these areas and actively pursues a state-of-the-art research program in these topics through the Multimedia Environmental Simulations Laboratory (MESL).

MESL was established in 1993 to provide scientific and technical expertise to local and international governments, as well as educational and private organizations in the area of environmental simulation and analysis.  The laboratory serves as a catalyst for integrating environmental engineering sciences and health sciences, yielding a conduit for the exchange of information and the creation of partnerships to improve the standard of life for populations throughout the world.

Karen and John Huff School Chair and Professor Joseph B. Hughes states "Dr. Aral deserves much recognition for this tremendous award.  He is a thought-leader in this critical area of research and he truly deserves congratulations for his accomplishments."

Dr. Aral earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, completing his doctoral studies in 1971.  Professor Aral is a registered professional engineering in the state of Georgia and the recipient of numerous honors including the U.S. Public Health Service Engineering Literary Award (2010), the Excellence in Applied Environmental Health Research award (2006), the American Academy of Environmental Engineers Excellence in Environmental Engineering Research award (2003), the Cuming Award from the Society of American Military Engineers (2000), the ASCE Environmental & Water Resources Institute Best Practice-oriented Paper Award (2000), and Honorary Professor of Environmental Sciences at Huazong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Peoples Republic of China (1998).  In addition, Dr. Aral has authored multiple publications within his area of expertise.  His most recent book, Water Quality, Exposure and Health, was released by Springer Publishing in 2009.  This publication is a multidisciplinary journal focused on global human health consequences of exposure to water pollution in natural and engineered environments. It provides a unique platform for scientists in this field to exchange ideas and share information on research for the solution to health effects from exposure to water pollution. Original research articles and integrative reviews are included.
