Aral, Guan Earn 2011 J. James R. Croes Medal

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Georgia Tech is pleased to recognize Drs. Mustafa M. Aral, P.E., F.ASCE, Jiabao Guan, P.E., M.ASCE, and Morris Maslia, P.E., D.WRE, M.ASCE, who were recently honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental Water & Resources Institute with the prestigious 2011 J. James R. Croes medal.

The Croes medal is one of ASCE's most respected honors. The award is given to the best paper published in any of the ASCE journals during the year. Aral, Guan, and Maslia are being recognized for their paper entitled "Optimal Design of Sensor Placement in Water Distribution Systems” which was published in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management (Vol. 136, No.1, pp. 5-18).

Dr. Aral earned his Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering at Georgia Tech and currently serves as professor of environmental engineering within the School. He specializes in large scale environmental simulations in surface water and groundwater specialization areas and actively pursues a state-of-the-art research program on these topics within the Multimedia Environmental Simulations Laboratory (MESL).

Dr. Guan is a senior research engineer in CEE. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil and environmental engineering at Georgia Tech Guan also holds a B.E. and M.E. in electrical engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Maslia serves as a research environmental engineer with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) in Atlanta, Georgia. His areas of expertise include environmental health, exposure assessment analysis, multimedia environmental transport analysis, and exposure-dose relations.

Established in 1912, the Croes medal is awarded on an annual basis, recognizing technical papers in the area of engineering science. The award is named in honor of the first recipient of the Norman Medal, John James Robertson Croes, who served as past president of ASCE.
