CEE Remembers Richard S. Fountain, BSCE 1950

With deepest sympathy, the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Georgia Tech mourns the loss of alumnus Richard S. Fountain, BSCE 1950. Richard was a nationally known bridge engineer who dedicated his career to advancing the competitiveness of steel bridge design within the marketplace and was the founder of SMDI's Steel Bridge Task Force. He passed away on March 14 at the age of 85.

Richard joined United States Steel Corporation in 1964 as consultant engineer, where he planned and supervised publications related to steel specifications for highway structures. He conceived and supervised the development of United States Steel Corporation's early computer design program "Simon" for steel bridges. In addition, he was a former GDOT senior engineering with a long and distinguished career in the highway bridge industry.

In 2001, AISI established an award in his honor. The Richard S. Fountain Award is presented annually to a member of the Steel Bridge Task Force and AASHTO Technical Committee for Structural Design to recognize leadership in steel bridge research and outstanding efforts to advance AASHTO specifications through the Steel Bridge Task Force.
