For the first time in school history, both the undergraduate and graduate civil engineering programs at Georgia Tech are ranked second in the nation.
The milestone comes with the release March 14 of U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 ranking of graduate engineering program. The civil engineering master’s and Ph.D. program rose to its highest-ever spot on the list at No. 2. Environmental engineering is No. 7 in the country.
“We are proud to continue our tradition of excellence and gratified to be recognized as one of the top engineering programs in the United States,” said Reginald DesRoches, Karen and John Huff School Chair. “The regard in which we’re held by our peers around the country is a testament to the daily work by our faculty members and students, whose efforts make the world tangibly better. It’s also a tribute to thousands of engineers who have studied with us and then gone on to do amazing things and inspire future generations.”
The civil engineering graduate program rose into a tie at No. 2 from a fourth-place tie in last year’s rankings. Environmental engineering is down from a tie at fifth last year, though the environmental engineering program rankings tend to be more volatile.
U.S. News rates master’s and Ph.D. programs each spring (undergraduate program rankings come out in the fall). The School has remained among U.S. News’ top 10 graduate programs for more than two decades, which DesRoches said also reflects the support of alumni and friends who give of their time and money to bolster teaching and research.
“So much of what we do depends on the generosity of our alumni and their dedication to helping us achieve our goals,” DesRoches said. “In particular, our alumni have been instrumental in helping support named chairs and professorships, which has enabled us to retain top talent and attract new talent to the School.
For the sixth year running, the civil and environmental engineering programs join every other graduate program in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering in the top 10 of their respective fields.
Overall, U.S. News ranked the College seventh in the nation and third among public engineering schools.
