The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) proudly recognizes Dr. Spyros Pavlostathis, professor of environmental engineering, as Fellow of the Water Environment Federation (WEF). Dr. 
Pavlostathis is one of seventeen members selected for this honor in the program's inaugural year.
Approved by the Board of Trustees last July, the WEF Fellow Recognition program honors the professional achievements, stature, and contributions of WEF members to the water profession, recognizing various fields of water expertise. It not only recognizes professional accomplishments in the professional segments served by WEF, it also reinforces WEF's reputation as a valuable water quality resource, due in large part to the expertise of its diverse membership. Some areas of recognition include design, education, operations, regulation, research, and utility management/leadership.
Dr. Pavlostathis is recognized for his expertise in the areas of environmental biotechnology and bioprocess engineering for the remediation of contaminated natural systems and the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, as well as the kinetics and modeling of biotransformation and biotreatment processes. His recent work has focused on the bioavailability, fate and biotransformation of recalcitrant organic compounds, such as dyes, pesticides, antioxidants, disinfectants, and antibiotics; the biotransformation of emerging environmental contaminants, such as nitrosamines, and naphthenic acids; bioenergy and biofuels production from biomass and waste streams; as well as the development of halophilic and thermophilic microbial processes.
Dr. Pavlostathis holds a Diploma in Agricultural Engineering from the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece, and he earned his MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering from Cornell University. In addition, he is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE) of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
