Applying for BS/MS Program

Students participating in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s (CEE) BS/MS program will have the opportunity to start taking graduate courses in their fourth year of undergraduate study.  This program is designed to attract the best-of-the-best undergraduate students, and is especially intended for students who demonstrate an interest in, and an ability for, additional education beyond the bachelor’s degree.

DO *NOT* USE THE "Click here for Online Graduate Application" link, above, to apply to the BS/MS program.

Application forms for this program can be picked-up in CEE's Student Services Office (Mason bldg., room 111).

 Who Should Apply

CEE students are eligible to apply for the program after completion of 30 semester credit hours at Georgia Tech and appropriate progress in their degree program.

As a practical matter, students should apply for the program at least two semesters prior to graduation in order to take graduate level courses prior to receiving their BS degree.

CEE students must have a Georgia Tech GPA of 3.5 or higher for admission into the Five Year BS-MS Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

 How The Program Works

The key components of the BS/MS program are:

  • Intense interaction among students and faculty, including mentoring and undergraduate research
  • Careful advising and course planning, to enable students to begin serious graduate course work in their fourth year of study.

Students in the BS/MS program remain undergraduates until they meet the requirements for the undergraduate degree, at which point they will receive their bachelor’s degree.  Georgia Tech and CEE will then change them to graduate status.

Application Instructions

The following materials must be submitted to CEE’s Student Services Office (Mason bldg., room 111) in order to be considered for admission into the BS/MS program:

  • Application for BS/MS Joint Program Admission form
  • Two Recommendation Letters from Georgia Tech faculty members
  • A short (200 word) essay describing how and why admission to the program will enhance your scholarly and career goals

There is no application fee, and GRE test scores are not required.

Participant’s Requirements and Benefits

Continuation in the program requires that students maintain a grade point average of 3.00 or higher.  Students who become ineligible, or who decide not to continue into CEE’s graduate program after completing their bachelor’s degree, will still have attained an enriched undergraduate education in civil and environmental engineering.

Students participating in this program will be eligible to count up to six graduate level semester credit hours toward both their bachelor's and master's degrees.  Most students in this program will be supported as graduate research or teaching assistants once they attain graduate status; graduate assistants pay reduced tuition and receive a monthly stipend.
