Biography
Dr. Pavlostathis is a Professor of Environmental Engineering in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Pavlostathis earned his Diploma in Agricultural Engineering from the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece and his MS and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Engineering from Cornell University. He is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEEM) of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and a Fellow of both the International Water Association and the Water Environment Federation.
Dr. Pavlostathis is internationally recognized for his expertise in the areas of environmental biotechnology and bioprocess engineering for the remediation of contaminated natural systems and the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, as well as the kinetics, modeling, and simulation of biotransformation and biotreatment processes. His recent work has focused on the fate and biotransformation of recalcitrant organic compounds, such as dyes, pesticides, antioxidants, disinfectants, antibiotics, and phytosterols; the biotransformation of emerging environmental contaminants, such as nitrosamines, and naphthenic acids; bioenergy and biofuels production from biomass and waste streams; as well as the development of halophilic and thermophilic microbial processes.
Dr. Pavlostathis has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and authored over 150 publications including books and book chapters. He has organized or chaired over 30 conferences and conference sessions and frequently serves as a consultant, invited speaker and panelist on behalf of city, county, state and federal agencies in the US and abroad. He is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Microbiology, the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, the Georgia Association of Water Professionals, the International Water Association, and the Water Environment Federation. Dr. Pavlostathis has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Environmental Engineering, Water Science & Technology (Guest Editor), Biotechnology Letters, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Water Environment Research.
