Dr. Emkin's primary research interests are in the areas of structural engineering, matrix structural analysis, numerical methods, design of steel structures, structural optimization, advanced computer programming, computer applications, and large-scale software development. He is also a well-known consultant and lecturer and lectures worldwide on topics related to the issues of quality, reliability, and cost effective use/misuse of computers, engineering ethics of using computers in civil engineering practice, advanced uses of computers in structural engineering practice, and advanced structural modeling, analysis, and design of complex structural systems. Dr. Emkin is the Founder and Co-Director of the Computer Aided Structural Engineering ("CASE") Center at Georgia Tech. The CASE Center is an advanced structural engineering computer software R&D center which develops and supports GTSTRUDL (a CAE system for finite element analysis and structural design). GTSTRUDL is among the most successful and well known software products of its kind in the world, and is used by thousands of structural engineers on a daily basis in over 35 countries worldwide. Dr. Emkin is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia, a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a Member of the American Society for Engineering Education. Dr. Emkin was the recipient of the Leon S. Moisseiff Award (with Dr. W. A. Litle), ASCE, 1973, the Computing in Civil Engineering Award for "outstanding achievements and contributions in the promotion of the effective use of computers in the practice of civil engineering," ASCE, June 1996, the Honorary Professor Award "for contributions enhancing higher education in China," conferred by Shaanxi Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Xian, People's Republic of China, April 1989, and a Nominee for the State_of_the_Art of Civil Engineering Award, Structural Division, ASCE, 1977. Among his numerous professional society activities are included Member, Task Committee on Software Evaluation, Technical Council on Computer Practices, ASCE, 1986-87, Chairman, Subcommittee on Systems and Languages, Technical Council on Computer Practices, State-of-the-Art of Computer Technology Committee, ASCE, 1977-81, Vice-Chairman, Task Committee on Avoiding Failures Caused by Misuse of Civil Engineering Software, Committee on the Practices to Reduce Failures, ASCE Technical Council on Forensic Engineering, 1993-1997, Vice-President (former Secretary) and U.S.A.
