Biography
Dr. Jochen Teizer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has been working as a researcher and consultant in the area of construction engineering and management, remote sensing, real-time pro-active resource detection and tracking, data processing and modeling algorithms, work zone safety, automation and emerging sensing technology systems since 1991. Jochen Teizer is the founder and director of the Real-time Project Information and Decision Systems Laboratory (RAPIDS) at Georgia Tech. The RAPIDS laboratory is a unique facility in the United States that focuses on developing and applying innovative technologies and methods improving the construction and transportation performance. The current research focuses on real-time resource location tracking mobile laser scanning, automated three-dimensional as-built modeling, advanced safety in heavy equipment operation and work sites, virtual decision making environments and learning tools. The RAPIDS research team is actively involved in projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Construction Industry Institute (CII), the National Cooperative Highway Research Program's (NCHRP), and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). RAPIDS reaches out and receives support from many other organizations and industry partners.
Dr. Teizer and his research team have won a number of awards including the CETI Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award by FIATECH in 2010, the Best Paper Awards at the 2010 Construction Research Congress and at the 24th International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction in 2007, and the Best Poster Award at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Construction Industry Institute (CII) in 2008.
Dr. Teizer is committed to teaching excellence and was awarded the 2009 Bill Schutz Junior Faculty Teach Appreciation Award in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He leads several efforts on K-12 construction education including elementary and high schools, the Construction Challenge and Destination ImagiNation, and the Construction Career Exposition organized by the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA).
Dr. Teizer has served on CII's Breakthrough Strategy Committee and has performed joint research collaboration as a visiting scholar in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He is an active member in two committees of the Transportation Research Board: Geospatial Data Acquisition Technologies in Design and Construction Committee (AFB80), and the Emerging Technology for Design and Construction Committee (AFH30). Since 2007 he is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the International Association on Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC). Dr. Jochen Teizer is currently serving as an Associate Specialty Editor of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) Construction Engineering and Management (JCEM) Journal.
