ISG FAQ - Backup / File Shares
How can I transfer a large file to someone?
How do I access personal and group network shares?
How do I use WinSCP to connect remotely?
Which servers and data does CEE provide backups for?
To transfer a file that is too large to email or you would like to make available more efficiently than using email you can place the file on your web space and provide them the link (URL).
Follow the instructions given in How do I access personal and group network shares? to open your folder on the server.
Then depeding on how you connected open one of the following two locations:
Using Windows File Sharing, open MyWeb
Using SFTP or CEEINFO, open the public_html folder
Note: All of the files in this directory are available via the web - only place public files in this directory
The link you will need to provide the recipient is constructed as follows:
http://www.ce.gatech.edu/~[GTACCOUNT]/filename.txt (Where [GTACCOUNT] is your GT Account login.)
For example, for bb198 to provide a file named test.txt:
http://www.ce.gatech.edu/~bb198/test.txt
Accessing Personal and Group Network Shares
There are several networked file shares provided to faculty and staff within CEE:
"Home"
personal file space
only accessible by you
"Group"
group file space
accessible by everyone within your affinity group
"MyWeb"
special share for publishing web pages
actually points to public_html under "Home"
creates web pages with the correct permissions whereas using "Home" does not
"Business"
allows viewing of your business office documents
this is a read only share
Option 1: Using Windows file sharing
This method only works from computers connected to the CEE network.
1. Click on the Start button
2. Choose Run
3. Type depot or depot.ce.gatech.edu
If a login box appears enter your GT Account Login and Password.
You will now have several folders to choose from, choose the one appropriate for the files you want to access.
Option 2: Using the CEEINFO secure web interface
This method can be used from any Internet connected computer with a web browser.
1. connect to <https://ceeinfo.cee.gatech.edu
2. login using your GT Account Login and Password
3. Click on File Manager in the left pane
4. Access your files as desired
Note: to access your Group share you have to manually enter the directory by choosing Change Directory.
The directory will be of the form: /home/users/[group]/common
Where [group] is substituted with one of the following: adjunct, business, construc, environ, front, geosys, isg, structur, stu_serv, transpo, or water.
For example: /home/users/isg/common
Note: Business shares are currently not available via the web interface.
Option 3: Using a Secure SHell FTP client (SFTP)
This method allows access from any machine connected to the Internet.
Directions for using WinSCP an SFTP client can be found here.
Note: Make sure you use the server name depot.ce.gatech.edu
For information on downloading and using WinSCP see:
ISG creates backups of all data on the mail server, web server, and the courses web server Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights over a span of several hours begining at 11pm.
The mail server (poseidon) has all mail backed up
(/etc, /home, and /var/spool directories)
The web server (depot) has all web pages and user file shares backed up.
(/etc and /home directories)
The courses web server (asopos) has all course web pages backed up.
(/etc and /home directories)
For each of these servers, the backups contain changed data going back three weeks (for a total of nine backup images).
