CEE Professor Terry Sturm was recently named editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (JHE) by the ASCE Environmental and Water Resources Institute. The JHE publishes fundamental and applied research contributions on topics ranging from closed conduit to free surface fluid flows including environmental transport processes such as sediment and contaminant transport.
JHE is a monthly publication with an annual output of approximately 1500 pages, including special editions on emerging research topics such as the interface between ecology and the physics of stream restoration and wetland vegetation systems. In this position, Dr. Sturm will have responsibility for managing the manuscript review and selection process, and making choices for the annual best paper awards with the assistance of approximately 20 associate editors. The editor also has wide authority in selecting and shaping the overall content of the JHE journal.
Dr. Sturm earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Mechanics and Hydraulics from the University of Iowa at the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research. He is the author of numerous research publications on open channel flow resistance, construction-site erosion control, compound channel hydraulics, bridge foundation scour, and resuspension of cohesive sediments. His research has been supported by agencies such as the National Academy of Sciences, U.S. Geological Survey, Georgia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 2008, Dr. Sturm was named Georgia Engineer of the Year in Education. In addition, he is the author of a widely used graduate-level textbook on open channel hydraulics, now in its 2nd edition.
