Dr. Roberto Leon, professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), is the newly appointed president of the Board of Governors of the Dr. Roberto LeonStructural Engineering Institute (SEI). SEI is one of seven Institutes within the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) charged with coordinating all ASCE activities related to the establishment, use, or discontinuance of standards in the area of buildings. SEI has more than 20,000 members with a goal of serving the unique needs of the structural engineering community more effectively while also being their voice on broader issues that shape the entire civil engineering community. CEE Professor Barry Goodno has also served as president of this definitive organization.

Professor Leon specializes in the behavior and design of steel and composite connections, seismic design of steel-braced frames and frames with partially restrained connections, behavior of bridges, serviceability of composite floors, and high performance materials. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, and served as assistant and associate professor in the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Leon joined CEE at Georgia Tech as a full professor in 1995, and served as interim chair of the School from 2002-2003. He is a member of the AISC Committee on Specification and the BSSC Provisions Update Committee. He is a Fellow of ASCE and ACI, as well as past president of the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). Dr. Leon is a registered professional engineer in Minnesota, the co-author of a book on composite construction, a non-technical book on bridges and tunnels, and is the author and co-author of over 80 articles in refereed journals.

SEI's mission is to advance and serve the structural engineering profession. Funded on October 1, 1996 as one of the first two institutes within ASCE, the organization serves as a principal source of technical information for structural engineers through the publications, webminars and seminars and technical conferences. It promotes continuing education and licensure of structural engineering professionals and improves the quality of business/professional practices among structural engineers.
