Emkin Elected Officer for Georgia Society of Professional Engineers

Dr. Leroy EmkinThe Officer Installation took place on June 13, and Dr. Emkin’s term will commence on July 1st.

GSPE is the leading state organization that promotes the engineering profession.  The organization’s mission is “the state society of engineering professionals from all disciplines that promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering, advocates licensure, and enhances the image and well-being of its members.”  Key activities include:

  • Providing professional development and networking opportunities including the Georgia Engineers Annual Summer Conference, PDH Saturday in the Fall, and local chapter meetings.
  • Sponsoring Georgia Engineers Week activities. 
  • Hosting a Professional Engineer Recognition Reception/Order of the Engineer Ceremony for newly licensed engineers
  • Recognizing and honoring engineers who make exceptional contributions to the profession (e.g., Engineer of the Year)
  • Lobbying at the State Capital, and making recommendations to the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
  • Conducting the annual Georgia MATHCOUNTS competitions (chapters and state).

Dr. Emkin received a BSCE in 1965 and a MSCE in 1966, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  He earned a PhD in 1970 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His primary research interests are in the areas of structural engineering, matrix structural analysis, numerical methods, design of steel structures, structural optimization, advanced computer programming, computer applications, and large-scale software development. Dr. Emkin is the founder and co-director of the Computer Aided Structural Engineering (CASE) Center at Georgia Tech, an advanced structural engineering computer software R&D center that develops and supports GTSTRUDL (a CAE system for finite element analysis and structural design). He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia, a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a Member of the American Society for Engineering Education.
