The Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, is one of the nation's top technological universities, distinguished by its commitment to improving the human condition through advanced science and technology. Founded in 1885 to help the State of Georgia move beyond its agrarian roots, Georgia Tech today provides a broad technological education to more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students and conducts a $300 million-per-year research program on the cutting edge of engineering, the sciences, computing, and many other disciplines. The Institute is a public university and is part of the University System of Georgia.

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, one of ten schools within the College of Engineering, was established 1896, and graduated its first student in 1902. The School encompasses three degree-awarding programs, including civil engineering, environmental engineering, and engineering science and mechanics.

The School's administration includes Dr. Joseph Hughes, Chair; Dr. Reginald DesRoches , Associate Chair; Dr. Donald Webster, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies; Dr. Kenneth Will, Associate Chair for Graduate Studies; and Dr. Paul Work, Associate Chair and Associate Director for GT Savannah.

The School directs three programs in civil engineering, environmental engineering, and engineering science and mechanics. The School awards seven degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE), a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEnvE), a Master of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics (MSESM), Master of Science (undesignated) (MS), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering is a new program that is not yet accredited by a commission of ABET.

The School provides undergraduate and graduate educational and research opportunities in six disciplines of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including structural engineering, mechanics and materials; geo-systems engineering; transportation systems engineering; environmental fluid mechanics and water resourcesenvironmental engineering and construction engineering. The School also offers a joint degree program leading to an MSCE or MS, and Master of City Planning, and a five-year program leading to bachelor's and master's degrees.
