BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Susan Burns is an Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA. She earned a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (1990), MS Civil Engineering (1996) and MS Environmental Engineering (1996), and PhD in Civil Engineering (1997) from Georgia Tech.
Professor Burns joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2004, after serving seven years on the faculty at the University of Virginia. Her research interests include geoenvironmental engineering, engineered materials, physical and chemical behavior of soils, cone penetration testing, and image analysis.
Dr. Burns is a member of the ASCE Geoenvironmental Committee, a member of the National Research Council Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering, and the President Elect of the United States Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research.
Dr. Burns was a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award (2000), the Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award (ASCE), the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement (ASCE), and the Alumni Board of Trustees Teaching Award (University of Virginia).
